Great. What an arsenal. Good thing I'd kept that $2.56. I dug in my pocket for the evidence I'd collected earlier. Add to assets:

1 pile blood flecks, Flash

1 chip Dad's augmented rock

I dumped them on the table. They sat there, silent and mysterious. I poked the scrunched-up paper. If I wanted Flash's blood analyzed, I needed an expert. There were companies you could pay to do this sort of thing, the kind of genetics labs that were hired to settle paternity suits, or engaged by criminal attorneys and the DA's office.

Two bucks fifty-six wouldn't pay for a DNA analysis. What did I even hope to gain? I needed to find Flash, not catalogue his body fluids.

The rock fragment's aura tingled my tongue. I frowned. Trans-state granite artifact. What did that even mean? State, as in solid-liquid-gas? It melted? Dissolved? Espectro, that sparkly burglar, hadn't been able to make it do so. Perhaps he could tell me more.

Sure he could, if he wasn't my enemy. And if he wasn't banged up on remand at Rock Island, tighter than an augmentium fish's butthole. Damn the PD's new augment-aware procedures. I couldn't get in there, not if I wanted to stay alive. No one could.

I'd just have to think of a way. Villains aren't the only ones who do things that can't be done.

I made a quick search of the police files. Jesus J. Flores, angry young asshole. His steel-studded dog collar glinted in the mug shot, below that bristly scalp and juicy scarlet-bruised face. Arrested, it said, for assault, attempt burglary, vandalize public property, resist lawful detention… and felony murder.

Oops. Must've killed one of those guards. Nice work, Jesus. You just got upgraded to twenty to life, minimum. Maybe they'd trumped up the charges. Didn't matter. Either way, the Gallery better have themselves good lawyers…

An idea sparked. Twinkle, twinkle, just like the little star.

It was fucking insane. I'd get caught. They'd kill me.

Right. Because this day had gone so well for me already. What did I have to lose?

Before I could change my mind, I grabbed the tablet and Glimmer's phone, just in case. Glanced down at my outfit. Nope. FREE HUGS would never do. I needed something more corporate…

My eyeballs swiveled towards Widow Swanky’s wardrobe, and I groaned, resigned. Trust Glimmer to pick a size zero. Oh, well. I’d just have to improvise.
